Mississippi (River) | river in the central United States which rises
in the basin of Lake Itasca (Minnesota) and flows into the Gulf
of Mexico after some 2530 miles. Its basin covers almost the
whole territory between the Appalachians in the East and the Rocky Mountains
in the West. Geographically it is divided into the Upper Mississippi
(from the source to the confluence with the Missouri
River), the Middle Mississippi (from the Missouri
River to the confluence with the Ohio
River), and the Lower Mississippi (from the Ohio
River to the Gulf of Mexico). Navigation knows only the
Upper (from Coon Rapids to the confluence with the Ohio
River) and the Lower Mississippi River (from the Ohio
to the Gulf). While the 866 miles of the Upper Mississippi
consist of a series of artificial lakes, impounded by 29 locks and dams,
the 953 miles of the Lower Mississippi are a banked up, more
or less free-flowing river. With its tributaries to both sides of it the river forms an artery of an integral inland waterway system that together with the system of the Tennessee River reaches out far into the east and the west of the continent. |
