Red River |

oude rechter zijrivier van de Mississippi,
die ontstaat uit vier bronrivieren: North Fork, Elm Fork,
Prairie Dog Town Fork und Salt Fork in het noordwesten
van Texas. Tussen 1968 en 1994 onstond door de bouw van vijf stuwen de
J. Bennett Johnston Waterweg, een gekanaliseerd riviergedeelte
van Shreveport / Bossier City tot aan de samenvloeiing van de Red
River met de Atchafalaya,
zodat het water van de Red River via de zogenoemde Old
River Control Structure ongeveer 30% van het water van de Mississippi
naar de golf van Mexico afleidt. |

Red River |
ehemals rechter Seitenfluß des Mississippi,
der aus vier Quellflüssen, der North Fork, Elm
Fork, Prairie Dog Town Fork und Salt Fork entsteht,
die im Llano Estacado im Nordwesten von Texas an der Grenze zu New Mexico
entspringen. Durch den Bau von fünf Staustufen nach 1968 entstand
bis 1994 der J. Bennett Johnston Waterway, eine ca. 380 km lange
kanalisierte Wasserstraße, die in Shrevesport / Bossier City beginnt.
Sie trifft bei Simmesport auf die sog. Old
River Control Structure, die den Zufluß des Mississippi
in den Atchafalaya regelt, der
etwa ein Drittel des Wassers aus dem Mississippi zusammen mit
dem Wasser des Red River in den Golf von Mexiko ableitet. Bei
Acme mündet der Black River aus
dem Norden in den Red River. |

Red River (of the South) |
formerly a right tributary of the Mississippi
that is formed by the confluence of the North , Elm Fork,
Prairie Dog Town and Salt Forks in the northwest of
Texas. The construction of five locks and dams in the years 1968-1994
resulted in 236-mile-long waterway that begins in Shreveport / Bossier
City. It joins the Atachalaya River at the junction with the Old River
- a flood control structure that leads the water of the Red and diverts
part of the water of the Mississippi, respectively, into the Atchfalaya.
Near Acme the Black River joins the
Red from the north. |
