Atchafalaya | 220 km langer ehemaliger Nebenarm im Delta des Mississippi, der nördlich von Simmesport, Louisiana durch den Anschluß über die sog. Old River Control Structure das Wasser des Red River und einen Teil (ca. 30%) des Mississippi-Abflusses aufnimmt. Der Fluß, der südwestlich von Morgan City in die Atchafalayabucht, bzw. in den Golf von Mexiko mündet, ist auf der ganzen Strecke schiffbar. |

Atchafalaya (River) | formerly a distributary of the Mississippi to which it is still connected via the Old River Control Structure, a system of weirs and sluices that regulates the tributary waters of the Mississippi of which it discharges ca. one third together with the water of the Red River that joins the Atchafalaya north of Simmesport, Louisiana. The Atchafalaya is navigable to its mouth, southwest of Morgan City, in the Atchafalaya Bay. It is connected to the Mississippi via the Old River Lock. | ||
