mit EHL (East of Harvey Lock) und WHL (West of Harvey Lock) näher
bezeichnet.

Gulf Intracoastal Waterway | a portion of the Intracoastal
Waterway located along the Gulf Coast between Florida and Texas.
The waterway runs approximately 1050 miles from Carrabelle, FL, to Brownsville,
TX, depending on the sources to St Marks, some 32 miles further east.
In Brownsville it hits the Brownsville Ship Canal not far from
the Mexican border. In Carabelle it joins the Crooked River (or
the St Marks River further east, respectively). The waterway
provides a channel with a controlling depth of 12 ft, designed primarily
for barge transportation. Although the U.S. government proposals for such
a waterway were made in the early 19th century, the GIWW was not completed
until 1949. Locations are defined in statute miles east and west of Harvey Lock (EHL / WHL), a navigation lock at the south-bank junction with the Mississippi in New Orleans. The east-westerly section of the waterway connects to the Mississippi River as well as to the Mobile River (and the Tenn-Tom system) and crosses the Pearl and Apalachicola Rivers (St. Marks, respectively). A number of branch canals serve industrial complexes and zones along the main route. A second 137,5-mile section of the GIWW runs in a north-south direction between Fort Myers and Clearwater mainly through the lagoons of Florida's west-coast. This section connects to the Okeechobee Waterway in Fort Myers (Caloosahatchee River) and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. |
