De overwegend voorkomende algensoorten zijn Sargassum natans terwijl de overigen behoren tot de Sargassum fluitans. Beide soorten lijken te zijn voortgekomen uit andere niet drijvende soorten sargasso.

Sargassomeer		 ausgedehntes pelagisches Vegetationsgebiet im Nordatlantik etwa nordöstlich der Karibik, das seinen Namen von dem Sargassogras hat, das dort weit verbreitet auftritt. Die Sargassosee liegt zwischen Golfstrom und Kanarenstrom und unterliegt daher ihrer Dynamik, wobei die Verteilung des Krauts auch von Wind und thermischen Faktoren abhängt. Aufgrund der jahreszeitlichen Veränderungen und da es sich um kein geschlossenes Gebiet handelt, ist die Bezeichnung seiner genauen Grenzen schwierig.

It is bounded by the Gulf Stream, the Canaries Current, and other currents which together produce an ever circulating boundary. The local pattern of distribution appears to also be affected by both wind and thermal fronts. Attempts to quantify the amount and distribution of Sargassum in the Atlantic have met with many difficulties, including changes with seasonality and regional patchiness.
Predominating species of algae are Sargassum natans while most of the rest is Sargassum fluitans. Both species apparently evolved from other anchored species of Sargassum, providing the basis of this bizarre ecosystem.
