Bosporus |
|

Bosporus |
Formerly also named the Strait of Constantinople
its name is derived from the Greek, meaning "Oxford", while
its Turkish name (bogaz) quite on the contrary denotes an 'abyss'.
The strait which is about 30 km long and between 700 and 2500 m wide,
lies on Turkish territory thus separating the European part of Istanbul
from the Asian districts. The depth of the channel varies between 36 and
124. Like in the Dardanelles
it is characterized by a countercurrent: while the surface current flows
from the Black Sea to the
Sea
of Marmara, the bottom current flows in the opposite direction.
Strong south-westerly winds, however may change the direction of the surface
current.
As a connection between the Sea of Marmara - and therefore the
Mediterranean Sea - and the
Black Sea the Bosporus is a busy international waterway
of considerable strategical importance. Free traffic is secured by the
Montreux Agreement, signed
in 1936.
