The line which serves as an important datum line for many ship calculations as well as for use during the construction of the vessel, may coincide with the bottom line of the moulded surface of the vessel, unless the latter has a designed drag to the keel. In vessels constructed with a flat-plate keel, the top of the keel may coincide with the bottom of the moulded surface; but if the keel plate is an outside strake the top of the flat plate keel throughout its length may be below the bottom of the moulded surface by the thickness of the strakes on each side of it, which are known as garboard strakes. For vessels having a flat-plate keel it is usual to omit altogether from the sheer plan the lines representing the top and bottom of the keel, and to show only the line of the bottom of the moulded surface. In steel vessels having a hanging bar keel the top of the keel invariably coincides with the line of the lowest boundary of the moulded surface; then the line of the bottom of the hanging bar keel is shown on the sheer plan to complete the lower contour of the vessel.
