Die Technik geht auf eine Zeit zurück als die Segel so klein geschnitten waren, daß sie auch bei schwerem Wetter noch stehen bleiben konnten, so daß bei schönem Wetter zusätzliche Segel aufgezogen wurden. Später wählte man die Größe eines Segels von vornherein so groß, daß sie bei schönem Wetter gefahren werden konnte, so daß bei schwerem Wetter Segel gerefft werden mußten.

Bonnets are used in small lug-rigged craft to avoid the weight of an additional bag of canvas when the sail is reefed.
