en Suez Canal arab. Qana al-Suways, is a large artificial maritime canal which cuts through an isthmus between the Arabian peninsula and the African continent west of the Sinai Peninsula. It measures 163 km (101 miles) in length and is 300 m wide at its narrowest point.
The canal which has been built with French capital in the decade 1859-69 to shorten the eastern sea routes to Asia and Australia now lies on Egyptian territory and connects the Mediterranean Sea (Bur Sa'id), and the Red Sea (al-Suways). It has no locks and comprises two parts, north and south of the Great Bitter Lake.
