Oxfordkanaal | 126 km lang narrow canal
tussen Coventry and Oxford.

Oxford Canal | a 78-mile long narrow canal linking Coventry and Oxford built in phases between 1769 and 1790, formed by a northern section between Coventry and Braunston and a southern section between Braunston and Oxford. The canal which is connected to the Grand Union Canal and the River Thames immediately became an important trading route between London and the English Midlands. However, with the opening of the Grand Union 1805 it had a strong competitor which resulted in a down-sizing of further planning and installations. With respect to the coming railway the northern section was shortened by 13 miles and stood its ground as an important regional transport route until the 1960s. While commercial traffic dwindled in the 1950s, the use by pleasure craft grew suffienciently so that even a temporary closore could be averted. | |||
