24km lange kunstmatige uitgang
van de Maas en de Rijn
in de Noordzee, die beginnend bij
de samenstroming van Oude en Nieuwe
Maas bij Vlaardingen, langs de nieuwe havens van Rotterdam stroomt,
om bij Hoek van Holland in zee uit te monden. Het eerste gedeelte tussen
Vlaardingen en Maassluis wordt door het Scheur
gevormd. |

24km langer künstlicher Ausgang von Maas
und Rhein in die Nordsee,
der beim Zusammenfluß von Oude und Nieuwe Maas bei Vlaardingen beginnt
und an den neuen Rotterdamer Häfen vorbeiführt, um bei Hoek van
Holland in die See zu münden. Die im wesentlichen künstliche Wasserstraße,
die sowohl von See- als auch Binnenschiffahrt genutzt wird, wurde zwischen
1862 und 1872 nach Plänen des Wasserbauingenieurs Pieter Caland angelegt. |

an artificial river mouth of both the Meuse
and the Rhine rivers into the North
Sea. Built between 1862 en 1872 it cut right through the dunes
at Hoek van Holland to become the main access route to the docks of Rotterdam.
More or less an artificial waterway which makes use of older natural waters
of the area it runs from the confluence of Oude
Maas and Nieuwe Maas
at Vlaardingen, including an old branch of the Maas named the Scheur,
to the sea at Hoek van Holland. |
