loxodromische lijn		   over het aardoppervlak lopende lijn die alle meridianen onder een gelijke hoek snijdt. De route van een schip bestaat dientengevolge uit loxodromen. Op de Mercatorprojectie verschijnt de loxodroom als een rechte lijn. Toch is de afstand langer in vergelijking met de grootcirkelnavigatie.

Rhumblinie		 auf der Erdoberfläche verlaufende Linie, die alle Meridiane unter dem gleichen Winkel schneidet. Der Weg eines Schiffs besteht folglich aus Loxodromen. In der Mercatorkarte erscheint die Loxodrome als gerade Linie (Kursgleiche), obwohl der Weg tatsächlich länger ist als die Großkreisfahrt.
