Huddersfield Narrowkanaal | Het 32 km lange kanaal voor het transport van en naar de textielfabrieken in de regio, verloopt van Ashton-under -Lyne in groot Manchester naar Huddersfield in West Yorkshire. Het overwindt met 74 sluizen (42 als E/ast en 32 als W/est aangegeven) en een 5209 m (oorspronkelijk 4950 m) lange tunnel via de waterscheiding van het Penninisch Gebergte en verbindt het Ashton Canal met het Huddersfield Broad Canal. De bouw begon 1794 en werd 1811 afgesloten. Het kanaal werd in 1944 buiten bedrijf genomen, de laatste doorvaart vond plaats in 1948. De sluizen werden dichtgemetseld en de kanaalhouders gedeeltelijk opgevuld. Het reconstructie van het kanaal werd afgesloten in 2001, en het is nu onderdeel van de South Pennine Ring. De waterscheiding ligt 196 m boven de zeespiegel. Het hoogteverschil tot Huddersfield Broad Canal bedraagt 133 m, tot het Ashton kanaal 102 m. | ![]() |

Huddersfield-Narrow-Kanal | Der 32 km lange Kanal, der dem Verkehr von und
nach den Textilfabriken in der Region diente, verläuft von Ashton-under-Lyne
in Groß-Manchester nach Huddersfield in West-Yorkshire. Er überwindet
mit 74 (42 als E/ast, 32 als W/est gekennzeichnete) Schleusen und einem
5209 m (ursprünglich 4950m) langen Tunnel die Wasserscheide der Pennines
und verbindet den Ashton Canal
mit dem Huddersfield Broad
Canal. Der Bau begann 1794 und wurde 1811 abgeschlossen. Nachdem
der Kanal 1944 außer Betrieb gestellt worden war, fand 1948 die letzte
Durchfahrt statt. Schleusen wurde zugemauert und Kanalhaltungen streckenweise
verfüllt. Die Wiederherstellung des Kanals wurde 2001 abgeschlossen. Die Scheitelhaltung liegt auf 196 m über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Höhenunterschied zum Huddersfield Broad Canal beträgt 133m, zum Ashton-Kanal 102m. |

Huddersfield Narrow Canal | The Canal runs for 20 miles between Huddersfield
in West Yorkshire and Ashton under Lyne in Greater Manchester, UK. It
connects end on with the Ashton Canal
and the Huddersfield Broad
Canal. Construction began in 1794 and was completed in 1811.
Woollen, worsted, and cotton mills in the region promised ample trade.
Officially abandoned in 1944 there was a last through passage in 1948.
After locks were made inoperable and sections filled-in, restoration began
in 1981. The canal was re-opened in 2001. It is now part of the South
Pennine Ring Although 74 locks were built to cross the Pennines the Standedge Tunnel had to be built to cut through the watershed and avoid the construction of many more locks. Originally 3miles 135 yards long the restored Tunnel measures 3 miles 418 yds in length, making it the longest waterway tunnel in Great Britain. Ascent from Ashton-under-Lyne: 334 ft (102m); ascent from Huddersfield: 436ft (133m); height of top pound: 645 ft AOD (196m). |
