nl Zuiderkruis   klein maar opvallend en reeds in de oudheid bekend sterrenbeeld, waarvan de vier helderste sterren een markant kruis aan de hemel vormen. Nadat het zich als gevolg van de precessie naar het zuiden had verschoven, raakte het in vergetelheid en werd pas weer aan het eind van de 15de, begin 16de eeuw weer ontdekt door Amerigo Vespucci.

Nachdem es sich durch die Präzession nach Süden verschoben hatte geriet es in Vergessenheit und wurde erst Ende des 15. Jahrhunderts, bzw. zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts von Amerigo Vespucci wiederentdeckt.

Southern Cross		 the smallest of the 88 modern constellations, but nevertheless one of the most distinctive. It is surrounded on three sides by the constellation Centaurus while to the south lies the Fly (Musca). After it had been thought of as part of Centaurus by the ancient Greeks it was defined as a separate asterism in the 16th century after Amerigo Vespucci's expedition to South America in 1501. Vespucci mapped the two stars, Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri as well as the stars of the Crux. Although these were known to the ancient Greeks, gradual precession of the equinoxes had lowered them below the European skyline so that they were forgotten there.
