nl spaarsluis   schutsluis, waarbij een deel van het water bij het laten leeglopen van de sluiskolk wordt opgevangen in de spaarkommen en wordt gebruikt voor het laten vollopen van de kamer bij het sluizen strooomopwaarts. Spaarsluizen werden steeds gebouwd wanneer de watertoevoer in het kanaal onvoldoende was om de afvloeiing, die door het sluizen verloren ging, op te vangen.

When a ship goes upstream or downstream the water level is adjusted to the headwater or tailwater by filling the lock chamber with headwater and discharging it into the tailwater. This means that water is regularly lost from the headwater. In canals having no or only very modest natural inflows, this water must be pumped back - an expensive undertaking in energy terms. Thrift locks reduce these amounts of water. When a ship moves downstream, the thrift basins are filled one after the other - using a pipe system - with the greater amount of the water drawn from the lock chamber, having been stored in the thrift basins. The residual water is discharged into the tailwater. For the ship travelling upstream, the stored water flows back again into the thrift basins through the same pipes. All that is needed still is the compensation of the loss water from the upstream impoundment. Both processes are based on the principle of connected pipes and require no additional energy. In the case of an installation with three thrift basins, about 60 % of the water is conserved every time ships pass through the lock, which otherwise would have to be pumped into the headwater again.
