Seven Seas |
denomination passed down from antiquity
with reference to the waters surrounding the land. Originally these were
(more or less) the Mediterranean,
the Red Sea, the Persian/Arabian
Gulf, the Indian Ocean,
the Chinese Sea and the
Oceans along the eastern and western African coasts. However, its denotation
changed with geographic knowledge. The Seven Seas of the modern times
are: North and South
Atlantic, North and
South Pacific, Indian,
Arctic, and Antarctic
Ocean. |
