pyriet		   ijzer-sulfide (FeS2). Het mineraal vormt vaak goed gevormde kristallen in de vorm van een kubus met karakteristiekegrotere en kleinere kristallen en met een goudachtige glans. Het wordt wel 'gekkengoud' ('fool's gold') genoemd omdat het soms voor goud aangezien werd. Het komt samen met andere sulfidehoudende mineralen voor, maar ook met oxiden, in kwartsaders, in afzettingsgesteenten van koolbedden en als vervangingsmineraal in fossielen. Pyriet wordt vooral gebruikt in de zwavelzuurproductie. Productieresten worden gebruikt als bijproduct in de staalproductie.

Pyrit 		FeS2, goldgelbes, sehr hartes, regulär kristallisierendes Mineral, das in größeren und kleineren Kristallen sehr weit verbreitet ist, sowohl auf Gängen wie als Imprägnation in Gesteinen, und manchmal sehr geringe Spuren von Gold enthält.
Pyrit wird zur Herstellung von Schwefeldioxid (Papierindustrie) und bei der Produktion von Schwefelsäure gebraucht, verliert jedoch hier seine ursprüngliche Bedeutung. Aus seiner Verarbeitung entsteht Abbrand.
en pyrite iron disulfide (FeS2). It has isometric crystals that usually appear as cubes. The cube faces may be striated (parallel lines on crystal surface or cleavage face) as a result of alternation of the cube and pyritohedron faces. Pyrite also frequently occurs as octahedral crystals and as pyritohedra (a dodecahedron with pentagonal faces). It has a slightly uneven and conchoidal fracture, a hardness of 6–6.5, and a specific gravity of 4.95–5.10. It is brittle, meaning it breaks or powders easily. Its metallic luster and pale-to-normal brass-yellow hue have earned it the nickname fool's gold, but ironically, small quantities of actual gold are sometimes found in pyrite. In fact, such auriferous pyrite is a valuable ore of gold.
Pyrite is used for the production sulfur dioxide, e.g. for the paper industry, and in the manufacture of sulfuric acid, though such applications are declining in importance. The residue of pyrite-processing is purple ore.
