using a suction embedment technique. The system can take different forms,
ranging from a gravity base with skirts to a no ballast caisson, which
resists all applied loads by soil friction and lateral resistance. In
the Delmar system the caisson is cylindrical in shape with the bottom
end open. Embedment of the anchor is accomplished by pumping water out
of the top of the caisson until it is fully penetrated into the seabed.
The process is simply reversed to recover the anchor. Because of its low
cost and easy installation, suction anchors are widely used for permanent
moorings that are subjected to vertical anchor loads. Suction anchors
can be installed in up to 3.250m water depth with current technology.
Suction anchors of up to 5m x 28m in size can be installed with anchor
handling vessels (AHVs). However, installation of large suction anchors
for FPSOs
in harsh environments may require a derrick barge. |
