de Sacramento-San Joaquindelta uit te monden, in de baai van San Francisco.
In de 19de eeuw voeren schepen stroomopwaarts tot Red Bluff, in de 20ste
eeuw nog slechts tot de stad Sacramento. Onbetrouwbare waterdieptes, zandbanken
en stuwdammen maken dat de rivier slechts door kleine boten kan worden
bevaren. Voor toegang tot de haven van Sacramento werd voor grote schepen
een diepwaterkanaal, het Sacramento
Deep Water Channel, ingericht, dat 1963 gereed werd en bij Cache
Slough Junction, ca. 24 km van de monding, uitmondt in de Sacramento. |

Fluß im Bundesstaat Kalifornien, der in den Klamath
Mountains entspringt und nach 640 km in die Bucht von San Francisco, im
Delta von Sacramento und San Joaquin, entwässert. Im 19. Jahrhundert wurde
der Fluß stromaufwärts bis Red Bluff befahren. Aufgrund der zahlreichen
Untiefen und durch den Bau von Staudämmen zur Elektrizitätsgewinnung wird
der Fluß zwar noch über weite Strecken von der Freizeitschiffahrt genutzt.
Die Güterschiffahrt beschränkt sich aber auf die Strecke Sacramento-San
Francisco Bay. Um ausreichende Fahrwassertiefe für größere Schiffe zu
gewährleisten, wurde nach dem 2. Weltkrieg der Sacramento
Deep Water Channel als Seitenkanal mit einer Fahrwassertiefe
von 9m eingerichtet, der 1963 fertiggestellt wurde und bei Cache Slough
Junction, ca. 24 km vor der Mündung, vom Flußlauf abzweigt. |

the Klamath Mountains and flows south for over 400 miles before reaching
Suisun Bay, an arm of San Francisco Bay. In the 19th century navigation
reached as far up as Red Bluff. Alternative transportation, unreliable
water depths and the construction of hydropower dams reduced navigation
to the section between the city of Sacramento and the Bay. To keep the
Port of Sacramento accessible for large vessels the Sacramento
Deep Water Channel was built and completed in 1963. The Channel
joins the river at Cache Slough Junction, some 15 miles upstream from
the Bay. |
