een ca. 1000 km lange, tot 300 km brede insnede tussen Iran en het Arabisch schiereiland, die van de Arabische Zee uit via de Golf van Oman en de Str. van Hornuz toegankelijk is. De golf ontleent zijn betekenis met name aan de aanwezigheid van aardolie in de regio en vormt de voornaamste transportroute hiervoor. Iran noemt het water de Perzische Golf , en Arabieren noemen het Arabische Golf. |  |
