Pegel Wasserstandsanzeiger Wasserstand |
a) Wasserstandsmesser mit metrischer Einteilung, meist hölzerner oder
eiserner, senkrecht am Ufer oder an Böschungen angebrachter Meßstab;

water gauge | an installation to measure the actual water level: this may
be as simple as a measuring rod or a more sophisticated mechanism housed
in a building on the embankment that records the change of the water level
inside, transmits the information to a central post and displays it on
the outside on an analogue or digital 'clock'. The latter are to be found in different places along the Rhine whose water level is published daily. It is, however, important to note, that the water level indicated by the water gauge is not the actual water level of the waterway: Firstly the measurement of a certain station is not only valid for the one spot where the water level is measured, but for a whole reach of the river. This reach differs not only in length, but also in profile, due to erosion of or deposits on the river bottom. Therefore the scale has to be adjusted accordingly. As a consequence the zero point of the gauge's scale is not identical with the river's bottom. The actual depth of the channel - and the maximum draught of a ship - has to be calculated by adding a certain value and to subtract another. These values may differ from one station to another, depending on the average water level of a reach and the minimum depth of the channel. |
