Oswego Canal | 25-mile long canal between the Erie Canal at
Three Rivers and Lake Ontario at Oswego that forms part of the
New York State Canal System. It originally began in Syracuse,
next to Weighlock Building (now the Erie Canal Musuem). It passed through
Liverpool and Onondaga Lake, and then it followed the Oswego River through
Phoenix, Fulton, and down to Oswego on Lake Ontario. It required 28 locks
to bring it down to the level of that Great Lake. When modernized around
a century ago, the new canal used slack water in the Oswego River, created
by dams, mostly in Fulton and Oswego. The canal now begin at Three Rivers,
where the Seneca and Oneida Rivers meet to form the Oswego River, not
far from Phoenix. (There is a connection to Onondaga Lake, off of the
modern Erie Canal, but the section in the city of Syracuse is now paved
over.) Lock #8 was first operated on May 28, 1910. Its operation was first difficult as the siphon principle had bugs in the system. Rather than using the standard large valves to control the flow of water in and out of the lock, it was built using siphon principle to "suck" water in and out of the lock. The one difficulty with the siphon principle is that is required a vacuum to remain present in its tank so that the next lockage could be conducted. Unfortunately the lock could not hold this vacuum for more than a few hours and thus required the shutting of the 20" outlet valves of each siphon. In 1943 a vacuum pump was added so that at any time the vacuum could be restored. In 1968 the lock was converted to typical electric valves for operation and now operates and visually looks similar to all other locks along the canal system. (NY Canals) |
