formverleimtes Sperrholz | Sperrholz, das in dünnen Lagen in Form gebracht
wird, die schichtweise miteinander verleimt werden. Man unterscheidet
'kalte' und 'warme' Verfahren. Bei letzteren härtet der Kunstharzleim
unter Druck in einem Autoklaven aus. Formverleimung wird zunächst im Flugzeugbau in den 1920er Jahren eingesetzt, dann aber vom Bootsbau, im Möbeldesign und in der Architektur übernommen. Mit dieser Technik ließen sich kleine, formstabile und seewasserfeste Boote, insbesondere Jollen, in großen Stückzahlen zu geringen Kosten herstellen. Obwohl die Technik auch in der 2. Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts durch neue Verfahren entwickelt wurde, verlor die Formverleimung von Sperrholz gegenüber den neuen Techniken der Kunststoffverarbeitung an Boden und spielt inzwischen kaum noch eine Rolle in der industriellen Fertigung. |

moulded plywood | in cold moulding plywood that is shaped by placing
thin layers of wood over a mould. The layers are glued together one after
the other. Hot moulding involves putting the hull on its mould into an autoclave and applying heat and pressure in order to cure the glue. Plywood moulding became popular before WWII when it was used in aircraft and boat building, furniture design, and architecture. Faireys were the first boatyard to use such aircraft manufacturing techniques in boatbuilding. Although this was a simple technique to meet the demand of dinghys cheaply in greater numbers, the technique eventually became obsolete with the introduction of synthetic materials in the 1950es and 60es. Notable developments in the 1970es were the development of an epoxy resin suitable for cold-moulding veneer. A second development was the popularization of the use of the vacuum press: glue-coated veneers are inserted into a plastic or rubber bag, along with a convex mould. The air is then sucked out, creating a vacuum and the opportunity for air pressure to hold the veneers against the mould. |
