Rute 		oben am Mast mittig und drehbar befestigte Spiere, die am Mast hochgezogen werden kann und zum Aufspannen eines Lateinersegels dient. Das vordere Ende der Rah wird zum Deck heruntergezogen. Dadurch wird die hintere Seite des Segels, dessen untere Spitze ebenfalls am Deck verspannt wird, aufgespannt. Da die Rute bei jeder Wende nach hinten und bei jeder Halse nach vorne um den Mast herumgenommen werden musste, wurde sie im 17. Jahrhundert durch die leichter handhabbare Gaffel ersetzt.
en lateen yard a pole which is suspended in the middle from the top of the mast which serves as a support for a (triangular) lateen sail. It is pivotable lengthwise as well as around the mast so that the sail can be adjusted to the wind. The forward end of the yard is fastened to the deck by a halyard, as is the lower rear point of the sail. Since the yard had to be shifted to the other side of the mast with each tack, it was replaced by a gaff from the 17th century on, first on smaller ships than on larger vessels, too.
