en   a cut of 10,7 km connects the upper stretch of the Spree river at the Osthafen near the Oberbaumbrücke in the Friedrichshain district, with the lower Spree at the so-called "Spree-Kreuz" in Charlottenburg. The canal was constructed according to plans by Peter Josef Lenné between 1845 and 1850. Used for the transport of fuel, the canal replaced the old waterway which had also served as a border (Landwehr) since the 15th century. It became notoriously famous on may 31st 1919, when the body of Rosa Luxemburg, murdered by rightist soldiers, was recovered from the canal.
