Men onderscheidt naar

cartographic projection chart projection |
a representation of the earth's surface
(and its three-dimensional characteristics) in which points on the earth
are correlated with points on a map or chart. Since this implies a reduction
of the spherical surface of the earth onto a two-dimensional plane, whereby
compromises are made as far as the consistency and accuracy of cartographic
representation is concerned. Over the centuries a whole range of projections
were developed, as well as combinations of different types of charts.
Since none of them is without any shortcomings, preference for one or
the other depends largely on its use. Depending on the position of the chart (projection) plane with reference to the projected surface of the spherical body a distinction is made between - azimuthal projections - conic projections - cylindric projections Further distinction is made with reference to the relationship between the perpendicular on the chart plane and the axis of the Earth (or any other spherical body of reference): In a - normal aspect projection the center of the chart plane is either the North or South pole; in an - equatorial projection the chart plane is tangent to the equator in one or several points; in an - oblique projection the chart plane is tangent to the surface of the sphere anywhere between the pole and the equator; |
