International Code of Signals |
a signal code that relies on
the set of signal flags.
One-letter signals are used for dire emergencies: For example,
U = "You are standing in danger", and O = "Man overboard".
Two-letter signals are distress signals: For example, NC = "I
need help", and AP = "I am aground".
Three-letter signals. A three-letter signal starting with the
M flag means a medical subject: For example, MSR = "Wound needs
stitches".
Groups of four flags show the ship's own particular signal. Each
ship is issued a copy of an international codebook giving the meanings
of the flag codes.
