Internationaler, von den USA aus
geführter Eisbeobachtungs- und Warndienst, dessen Entstehung auf
den Zusammenstoß der Titanic mit einem Eisberg 1912 und einen Beschluß
der ersten International Conference on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)
im Jahr 1914 zurückgeht. In der Folge übernahm die Küstenwache
der Vereinigten Staaten die Aufgabe, stellvertretend für die Unterzeichnerstaaten
der verschiedenen Beschlüsse der Konferenz und der SOLAS und gegen
anteilige Erstattung der Kosten, die Eislage des Nordatlantik zu beobachten
und entsprechende Berichte herauszugeben. (Zu den beteiligten Staaten
gehören seit 1993 neben den USA und Kanada, Belgien, Dünemark,
Deutschland, Finnland, Frankreich, Griechenland, Großbritannien,
Italien, Niederlande, Norwegen, Schweden, Polen, Spanien, Japan und Panama.)
Hierfür standen anfangs zwei Kutter der U.S. Coast Guard zur Verfügung.
Ein drittes Schiff für ozeanografische Beobachtungen im Bereich der
Grand Banks wurde 1931 in Dienst gestellt. Nach dem 2.Weltkrieg gewann
die Beobachtung aus der Luft an Bedeutung, die seit 1946 von einer Basis
in Neufundland (Argentia) betrieben wurde. Während diese Basis, die
sich seit 1966 in Governors Island, N.Y., befand, 1983 nach Groton, CT,
verlegt wurde, findet die Luftaufklürung von St.John's, Neufundland,
aus statt. |

Ice Patrol |
an international monitoring service
for the presence of icebergs in the northern Atlantic Ocean which reports
their movements for safety purposes. It was established in response to
the sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.
Upon a resolution of the first SOLAS conference in 1914 the U.S. Coast
Guard was commissioned by its members to monitor the North Atlantic and
to report on the ice conditions. After WWII the observations which had
been done by ships alone were also done by airplanes from a base in Newfoundland.
Today the International Ice Patrol is located at the Coast Guard Research
and Development Center in Groton, Connecticut. The ice reconnaissance
detachment moved to Canadian Forces Base at Summerside, Prince Edward
Island in 1971. In 1973, this detachment, usually comprised of 11 aircrew
and 4 ice observers, moved to St. John's, Newfoundland to be closer to
the patrol area. After having been relocated to Gander in 1982, the detachment
moved back to St. John's in 1989. |
