in tankers a system that must be able to supply large volumes of gas to the cargo tanks while the ship is discharging and small top-up volumes when the tanks are breathing on passage to displace oxygene and to minimize combustion of (e.g.) evaporating hydrocarbon gas.

During discharging the inert gas system should be able to deliver 25% more than the maximum volumetric cargo-pumping rate, using all cargo pumps, but without exceeding the designed working pressure of about 0.2 bar. The washed gas must have an oxygen content of not more than 5% by volume. On ships which use steam turbines to drive the cargo pumps and which have boilers to provide the steam, the inert gas can be produced by using the boiler flue gas and passing it through a scrubber.

The gas should be pumped to the cargo tanks by fans that can maintain a positive pressure at all times. The gas should pass through a water trap on deck whose function is to ensure that hydrocarbon vapor from the tanks does not penetrate back into the engine room. The water trap, or water deck seal, should be provided with heating coils to prevent freezing in cold weather. A recirculation loop should be provided so that gas can be returned to the scrubber when demand drops. The gas can also be vented to the atmosphere.
