Fossdyke Navigation | The Fossdyke Navigation runs from Torksey
Lock, which joins the tidal river Trent
to Lincoln High Bridge, where the Fossdyke Navigation joins the
Witham Navigation. The Fossdyke Navigation
is 11.3 miles long and has one lock. It is said to be the oldest canal
in England still in use, dating back to Roman times around 120 AD. One
of its more notable cargoes was the stone used to build Lincoln Cathedral
in the 11th century. But other than work carried out during the time of
Henry I in 1121, few improvements have been made to the original design.
Under James I. a lock was built in 1671. In spite of the High Bridge which
was a bottleneck that had been widened without actually being removed
and the railway which took over the transport of coal and wool, the canal
was used for grain shipping until 1972. One of the most distinctive features
of the canal is the Glory Hole, where the canal passes through an arch
in an ancient half-timbered building which stands right across the water. |
