The Third Officer is responsible for:
o the safety of all personnel working for him
o the maintenance and upkeep of all deck portable fire fighting equipment and lifesaving appliances and for the keeping of associated records.
o maintenance of navigational equipment as detailed in the Company Instructions.

He/she is also responsible to the Master for the complete records of on board training and where required shall act as nominated officer for the GMDSS station with responsibility for associated tests and records.
