afwijking		   afwijking van de magneetnaald van een kompas aan boord voortkomend uit de miswijzing van de noordrichting. Afhankelijk van het permanente en vluchtige magnetisch veld van het schip kan de deviatie mathematisch worden uitgedrukt door de afwijkingsformule.

(Magnetkompaß)Ablenkung 		Bordablenkung der Nadel eines Magnetkompasses aus der mißweisenden Nordrichtung. In Abhängigkeit vom festen und flüchtigen Schiffsfeld kann die Deviation mathematisch ausgedrückt werden durch die Deviationsformel.
Man unterscheidet zwischen
- Halbkreisdeviation (Wechsel des Vorzeichens bei 180° Veränderung des Kompaßkurses;)
- viertelkreisige Ablenkung (quadrantische Deviation, wächst und schwindet in jedem Viertel der Kompaßrose)
- konstante Deviation (gleichbleibende Kursabweichung);
- restliche Kursabweichung (residuelle Deviation), die nach der Kompaßkompensation vorhanden ist;

magnetic deviation		 the angle between the magnetic meridian and the axis of a compass card, expressed in °E or °W to indicate the direction in which the northern end of the compass card is offset from magnetic north.
Deviation is caused by disturbing magnetic influences in the immediate vicinity of the compass.
- semicircular deviation changes sign (E or W) approximately each 180° change of heading;
- quadrantal deviation changes sign approximately each 90° change of heading;
- constant deviation is the same on any heading.
