Talrijke 'Altrheine' ontstonden in de 19de eeuw door waterbouwkundige ingrepen, als gevolg van de regulering van de Rijn en door de bouw van het Rijn-zijkanaal. 'Altrheine' zijn maar beperkt voor schepen bevaarbaar en worden vaak als jachthavens of grindgaten gebruikt.
